Birds of Prey trailer at the bottom.

Birds of Prey is the most recent film coming out of Warner Brothers and DC Comics. Its an all female team up film staring fan favorite Harley Quinn. The film tries to walk the fine line of recognizing that Suicide Squad happened and that it didn't happen. They do this by basically using the same character from that movie, that being Harley, and setting the story shortly after her break up with the Joker. This allows for Harley to become her own strong independent character without joker hovering over her shoulder at every moment. Now even though joker is out of the picture, that doesn't mean his influence is by the way side. His protection towards Harley is now gone which leads to the main villain of this film, Black Mask played by Ewan McGregor, to step in to take her out.

One of the things that really surprised me was the performance of Margot Robbie or Harley Quinn. After Suicide Squad I wasn't a huge fan of her character, it felt forced and overdone to me. In Birds of Prey however, she really shines as the character I wanted her to be. A strong, crazy, badass girl that can hold her own and be the anti-hero she is from the comics.

Another thing I noticed that I was pleasantly surprised about was how they portrayed the other members of the team. In the trailers leading up to the film, they seemed to be focusing a lot on just Harley and not the rest of the team. I was happy this wasn't the case in the actual film. Now although this is very much a Harley Quinn focused film, Montoya, Huntress, Black Canary, and Cassandra Cain all get their due.

The last thing I would like to talk about is the action and soundtrack. The soundtrack to the film is top notch and easily my favorite from this year. It has a good mix of timeless classics and modern music and is mixed very well to the events of the film. The action was really great but only in moderation, I felt that I would be enjoying the action/fighting for a while but it seemed to drag on at some points of the film. Some of them probably could've been a little shorter.

Overall, I was pleasantly surprised by the film, the characters, soundtrack, and story was very well done. The action was very fun but seemed to drag on a bit and there are a few other complaints I have but I don't want to spoil it for you guys. I highly recommend this fans of the comic book genre.
