Pixar's Onward trailer at the bottom.
The latest installment in the animated world of Pixar is an adventurous tale of two brothers trying to see their father one last time. Onward creates a world full of unicorns, trolls, and elfs, and puts a modern spin on it where magic and taken a backseat to technology. The story is of two very different brothers who lost their father due to illness when they were very young, have a chance to bring him back with a spell he left behind. The spell has a catch however, they only have 24 hours with him. After they mess up the spell, its up to the two of them to go on a adventure full of dangerous taverns, trap filled caves, and a final boss to retrieve the crystal to bring him fully back.

Like any Pixar film, the animation takes another step up in quality. The use of color really impressed me, especially when they use the wizard staff to perform spells. I also really enjoyed the world building this film did. We have seen countless time before that Pixar is able to build a unique world that puts a fun spin on what our real world is like. Cars, Wall-e, Toy Story, Finding Nemo, and many more have all done this. In Onward, they are able to take a world full of magic and wonder and use technology to explain why this world doesn't use it anymore. I think this was a slight nod at our real world history; long ago, our ancestors believed magic and monsters but science and technology soon was able to explained what we once saw as 'magic'.
The story of Onward is what really shined in my eyes. On the surface the film focus's on brothers on a quest to finally have a moment with their father. Like all siblings, these brothers don't always get along and like all quest or road trip films, the main characters learn something about themselves or each other. I don't wanna say more but the ending definitely had me in tears.
Overall, Onward was a great addition to the Pixar library and definitely tug at the heart strings for me personally. I would recommend this to almost anyone cause I believe the story is something anyone could find a emotional connection to. The two main characters are voice by Tom Holland and Chris Pratt which also makes the film that much more enjoyable with their on screen chemistry. The film is now available on Disney+ due to the corona virus, so go give it a chance and hopefully you enjoy.
