Part 2 of this blog series takes us to the time of the 90's, full of biker jackets, alternative rock, and Blockbuster! Captain Marvel doesn't necessary feel like its from the 90's however, it presents a more science fiction tone due to it dealing with two alien races, the Skrulls, and the Kree. Basically the film is about Carol Danvers rediscovering who she is and was before being taken by the Kree general Yon-Rogg. I think the film struggles because of this. The film is our first introduction to Carol so its hard to latch onto any emotional connection with only flashbacks and a revelation/makeup scene towards the end of the film. I think the film would've been received much better if they instead focused on Carol learning how to use her powers and the capabilities of them, similar to the other Captain Marvel film from DC, Shazam. But lets dive into some Easter Eggs from the film and let me show you why the film is a lot more important to the MCU going forward, even though its set before 21 of the other films in the series so far.

I want to first start with the smaller things this film brings to the MCU, the first being the connecting tissue of the tesseract's whereabouts between the events of Captain America: The First Avenger and the first Avengers film. The last we say of the cube was when Howard Stark found it at the bottom of the ocean while searching for Steve Rodgers. Captain Marvel teaches us that after Howard found the cube and began studying it along with Shield to harvest its energy, it eventually ended up within Project Pegasus where Mar-vel was using it to create a light speed engine for the Skrulls so they could escape from the Kree. By the end of the film however, the cube ends up into the hands of Nick Fury and the we will cover what happens to the cube next when we get to The Avengers. Oh yeah, we also see how Fury lost his eye and i'll be completely honest and say I wasn't a fan of how they did it.

Going into the film I knew the Kree were going to be the villain due to Yon-Rogg being a prominent villain to Captain Marvel in the comics but I didn't expect the Skrulls to be portrayed the way that they were. Most people are familiar with the Skrulls from the popular secrete invasion comic story line where they hide as members of the Avengers and eventually take them down from the inside. However, in Captain Marvel, they are portrayed as refugees which I really liked because its so relevant in todays world and helped me have a emotional reaction to the situation. In a recent interview, people associated with marvel have confirmed that not all Skrulls are good when asked if the secrete invasion story line was possible. This now leaves the door open for a possible future secret invasion story line and could hint at the next Avengers level threat. Maybe some of your favorite characters have been Skrulls in hiding this whole time!

I want to lightly touch on two more things, the first being the Supreme Intellagence. In the film the Supreme Intelligence takes on the form of whoever meant the most to you in your life, which in Carol's case is Mar-Vel. The Supreme Intelligence is an important character in Marvel comics do to its extreme amount of power it holds over the universe. Being the leader of the Kree, it to wanted a piece of the infinity stones power when sending for the cube. With the Supreme Intelligence now a clear enemy of Captain Marvel, it'll be interesting when they eventually cross paths again in future films, especially after the events of Endgame.

The last thing I want to cover is the character of Monica Rambeau. In Captain Marvel, she has a small role as the daughter of Carols best friend Maria Rambeau. In the Comics however, she grows up to be the hero known most commonly as Photon. She has possessed other names throughout the years however including, Pulsar, Spectrum, and even Captain Marvel for a time. She even led the Avengers for a short run. Due to recent news coming out that an older version of Monica will be featured as a *Sword Agent* in the upcoming WandaVision Disney+ series, its clear she will have a huge role going forward.

*Sword is the new space version of shield, making its first appearance in the post credit scene of Spider man: Far From Home.*
