The Lovebirds directed by Micheal Showalter and starring Issa Rae and Kumail NaniJiani was originally supposed to debut in theaters but due to covid-19 the film was pushed out on Netflix. I think this was the right move for the film because I feel a hour and a half rom-com is the type of movie that doesn't need the big screen with the best surround sound to be successful. The Lovebirds is the type of movie you find scrolling Netflix on a Friday night, popcorn in hand, pajamas and blanket on, and enjoy.

The film is about a relatable modern couple going through the typical roller coaster of a relationship. When things are taking a turn for the worst, the couple gets caught up in a murder mystery where they are on the run from the cops. They must now come together to solve the murder and clear their name.

Like I said in the title, this movie is as simple as it can get. The story is very straight forward and easy to follow. I think the magic however, lies in the dialog between Issa and Kumail's characters. Their back and forth banter and chemistry is really the driving force of the film and really kept me from turning it off the whole time.

I think the comedy was also solid. The style is more quick and witty comedy with lots of references. I think this style of comedy is becoming more common in today's films so I am comfortable calling it modern. Most of the chokes made me chuckle or laugh but none made me cry or belly laugh so take that as you will. I also felt the length was perfect for what this film was going for. Rom-Coms that go over two hours really start to lose the audience a lot of the time and tend to stray from the genre of film it is falling into. The Lovebirds was just the right length, not to long, not to short.

Overall this film was a fun, quick, and easy watch. The length was just right to where I didn't get bored and it didn't feel rushed. The comedy was quick and witty which made for a simple film. The character chemistry and dialogue carried the film and really made it memorable for me in the end. This film was perfect for streaming and I feel would've struggled on the big screen. I recommend this to anyone looking for a funny, light hearted, film to fill the shadow of boredom quarantine is casting on all of us.
