The latest and greatest from the wonderful Taika Waititi has swept Hollywood by storm. JoJo Rabbit is a satirical tale about a naive boy in the Hitler youth; sort of like boy scouts for Nazis. This particular boy has a interesting dilemma however; his imaginary friend is Hitler and he finds a Jewish girl living in his wall. Throughout the entire film we get to watch this boy's internal struggle between what his mind is telling him versus what his heart tells him. JoJo Rabbit really does the impossible by taking a very serious, heartbreaking topic, and crafting it into satirical love story.

Due to the success this film had during the awards season I went in with high hopes. I am happy to say that this film exceeded my expectations. I really enjoyed the perfect balance of lighthearted mockery of the ridiculous Nazi ideology with the more serious themes that come with war, racism, and growing up surrounded by it. The performances by all the actors were top-notch, but I must give the crown to Roman Griffin Davis who plays JoJo. Davis does a masterful job showing the internal struggle his character faces while also keeping it accurate to how a child would act. I think him being at a younger age allows him to keep the childish act but his ability to convey those darker, deeper themes of loss and love is amazing.

At the films core, it's a story about a kid growing up in a world telling him one thing is right while his heart is telling the opposite. The path he takes through this change what I think makes this film so satisfying and fulfilling to watch and easily makes it one of my favorites. I am really interested in re-watching to look for cinematographic cues to thematic elements and tonal patterns. I highly recommend this film to people looking for a good laugh, cry, and smile.
