1917 trailer is attached to the bottom.
1917, directed by Sam Mendes is an adapted story told to him by his grandfather who serves in the first world war. The story is simple, two soldiers are tasked with moving past the assumed empty German front line to relay a message to a group of about 1600 men that are about to walk into a German trap. The unique thing about the film, that also won it multiple award, was the fact that the entire movie is edited to be one continuous shot.

The one take format that the film takes is what make this film so special. Unlike the typical war film where there tons of explosions, action, and fighting; this film takes a much different approach. 1917 focuses more on the characters and their journey rather than the action. There is still action but a much more I would say realistic for the situation kind of action. The one shot also increases the amount of immersion you have with the film, normally I would naturally wanna blink when the camera cuts but since there are no cuts, I found myself not wanting to blink so I wouldn't miss a thing. The film also does a masterful job recreating what life was like during the WW, trenches, civilians, landscapes, all made the film all that more immersive. Here is an example of the one take format that the entire film uses.
The writing was also top notch in my opinion, Mendes went for a very simple approach which really made the difference. The characters would tell a few stories when walking about home life and such to add to character depth but for the most part it was moment to moment conversation that felt real and not off a script. I think being able to pull off natural conversation in a film speaks to the level of writing. There are also moments where words would not due the situation justice, and the facial acting of the co-stars was truly masterful.
Overall, This is easily one of my top films of all time. The amazing writing/action, combined with a film style I've never seen before truly makes this a film I will remember for a life time. The film is available to rent and buy so please go out and watch this film, and hopefully by the end you'll have tears in your eyes as I and many others have had.
